This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the next generation of photonics solutions by protecting proprietary thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology. You will spearhead patent drafting and IP management activities, securing freedom to operate by collaborating with leading patent and law firms in the field.

Position Overview

You will be responsible for growing the patent portfolio and securing freedom-to-operate for the company and its customers. Leveraging your experience in photonics and skills in patent drafting, you will apply your expertise to the field of integrated photonics and the proprietary TFLN platform.

Key Responsibilities

• IP Extraction and Disclosure Drafting: Actively work with R&D teams, including design, PDK, process development, characterization, and test teams, to extract IP-relevant information. Serve as an ambassador for IP excellence by training staff in disclosure drafting and preparing documents for patent professionals.
• Interaction with Patent Law Firms: Act as a sparing partner with internal and external patent attorneys to facilitate the drafting process. Drive claims and figure drafting with a keen eye on details, ensuring the quality of the patent application process through passion and rigor.
• Competitor IP and Freedom-to-Operate Monitoring: Track freedom-to-operate (FTO) using state-of-the-art patent analysis software. Analyze identified competing IP, define response strategies, and engage external law firms to take counter-measures against conflicting IP.
• Patent Family Tracking: Interact with external patent firms and patent offices (USPTO, EPO, etc.) to track docket number timelines. Collaborate with law firms to address office actions and file responses to examination reports. Define timelines and content for divisional patent applications to secure the fastest and largest possible IP coverage in designated countries.
• Collaboration: Work closely with R&D teams from design to optical testing and characterization to advance the patent portfolio. Occasional travel to law firms and partners may be required.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain thorough documentation, report findings, establish standard-operating procedures, and train new colleagues.
• Innovation: Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in photonics, incorporating new techniques and technologies into the R&D landscape and contributing to the IP portfolio.

Qualifications and Skills

• Educational Background: An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Communications, Integrated Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
• Experience Level: At least 3 years of work experience in photonics, integrated photonics, or applied physics. Prior experience with platforms such as TFLN, silicon photonics, SiN, InP, or microwave photonics is a plus. Advanced training as a European or US patent attorney is advantageous. A track record of filing patent applications or growing patent portfolios is required. Experience in patent litigation is a plus.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in patent management tools like PatSnap, PatOffice, or similar.
• Organization & Documentation: Strong organizational skills with excellent oversight and attention to detail. Ability to use best practices to maintain confidentiality and interact professionally with external law firms.
• Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and with international customers. Cultural awareness and the ability to tailor communication style to US, European, and Asian partners.
• Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating flexibility and resilience in the face of change.
• Language Skills: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of German, French, or any Asian language is an advantage. Proficiency in understanding and speaking patent language is essential.
